Chasing Your Happiness

Sometimes people ask me how to get
the motivation to live a healthier lifestyle.
This question always sort of perplexes me. How can a stranger tell you how to make yourself want to do something? It seems to me that either you want to or you don’t and there’s nothing that anyone can say or do to change that.

The day that you decide to do it…you will!
Until then, you might start but it probably won’t last. If you’re doing it because others want you to, it definitely won’t last. If you’re doing it because you want fast weight loss, it will be hard to keep it up because fast weight loss never lasts. If you have a ton of difficult challenges in your life, you may be using it all up on other things and at the end of the day, eating well or exercising just don’t make it onto your priority list.

Life is complicated! Sometimes, it’s all you can do to just make it through the day. I don’t believe in “no excuses,” I believe in facing your obstacles and acknowledging reality. You need to learn how to  forgive yourself and move on.

The other thing I’m starting to notice is that some women are having difficulty with “balancing” all the daily obligations with working out and eating healthy. My motivation for eating well and exercising is it makes all the other stuff I “have to” do manageable. I make it a priority to take care of myself. The hour or two extra I spend each day exercising and cooking healthy meals makes the other 22-23 that much better.

Just do the best you can today.
If it’s not good enough for other people, too bad. If it’s not good enough for you, look at what small changes you can make in your life to free up some motivation from other resources to use toward making healthier choices.

Above all, do what makes you happy and follow your heart. There’s more to life than food and exercise.
